The College of Arts, Letters, and Education at Eastern Washington University invites applications for one full-time Lecturer position in Early Childhood Education in the Department of Education to begin September 2021. This position is a one-year appointment for AY2021-2022 with the option for renewal based on funding availability and department need.

The preparation of teachers is central to the mission of the Education Department and the selected individual will work closely with colleagues in all areas of the department.

Our program currently offers the following special education certification options:
  • Early Childhood Education with Special Education Option
  • Early Childhood Special Education Minor
  • Special Education Minor (Minors do not meet a State of Washington Special Education endorsement).
  • M.Ed. in Special Education (online program)

We seek an outstanding early childhood educator with successful experience teaching in preschool - third grade settings as well as teaching early childhood education courses at the undergraduate level. Experience in inclusive early childhood education environments is highly desirable. Responsibilities will include teaching courses in early childhood assessment, guiding behavior, curriculum methods, differentiated instruction for young children, and other coursework as assigned according to the needs of the department and the expertise of the candidate hired into the position. Faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.

The candidate selected for these positions may be expected to teach face-to-face classes, hybrid or blended classes and/or online classes according to the needs of the department.


Required Qualifications:
  • M.Ed. in early childhood or a related field
  • Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience in preschool third grade settings or the equivalent.
  • Record of ability to foster community relationships and engage in learning collaboratively with students, community partners, staff, and colleagues.
  • Familiarity with NAEYC competencies for early childhood professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood (P-3) settings
  • Experience teaching diverse populations and engaging with diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.


Preferred Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who offer one or more of the following preferred qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in early childhood or a related field.
  • Reliability and/or experience with Teaching Strategies Gold
  • Reliability and/or experience with the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS)
  • Familiarity with state Quality Rating and Improvement Systems (QRIS)
  • Expertise in the area of inclusive early childhood education and blended practices
  • Active participation in local, state, or national early childhood work groups/professional organizations
  • NAEYC membership

Responsibility / Duty:
Teaching: typical workload for this position will involve 45 credits per academic year in Early Childhood Education, and the candidate may be required to teach other courses that fulfill the need of the Department and Program according to the expertise of the candidate hired into the position.

Teaching includes the following additional related responsibilities as defined in the faculty CBA:
  • Meet all scheduled classes
  • Plan, organize and inform students of the course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance regulations and methods of evaluation including grading scales
  • Schedule and attend office hours
  • Turn in grades according to established deadlines

Additionally, all faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.

Conditions of Employment:
The candidate hired into this position will receive a one-year appointment for AY2021-2022 with the option for renewal based on funding availability and department need.

The required start date for this position is 09/16/2021. To be considered eligible for appointment into the position, applicants must be available and able to start in the position no later than 09/16/2021.

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

Note: Interviews will be conducted via Zoom (camera must be enabled). While we anticipate being open for in-person instruction for academic year 2021-22, should Washington State or university pandemic restrictions disallow for in-person instruction, then courses will be taught via online platforms, including Zoom and other technologies. Candidates must be able to demonstrate competence using these technologies.

Salary Information: Minimum salary is $50,786;
